Tour 6: Gobi Desert and Central Mongolia

This tour attempts to combine as many different types of landscape as possible. The Gobi desert already offers a lot of variety. After that we take a turn in the Khangai mountains, drive through endless steppes, and in the end we visit the spectacular rock formations of the Khentii. If you like variety, then this is your tour!

Please ask us for your preferred time period!

When your travel time is in july, then we will of course visit the Naadam festival in Kharkhorin, The itinerary will be adapted accordingly.

2. Day

Welcome to Mongolia!

On arrival, we get acquainted with the capital of Mongolia, which combines old traditions with the modern civilisation of today. The connection to prehistoric times is made by the dinosaur skeletons in the Museum of National History. The museum of mongolian history presents the development of the mongolian culture.

3. Day

Off to the desert!

The second day introduces us to the desert climate of the south, as well as the special flora and fauna of this area. Dalanzadgad is located at the end of the Altai mountain range, and functions as the entrance gate to the Gobi. Yolin-Am is a ravine nearby, which fascinates both through its geological features as well as its rich bird population. Especially famous are the lammergeier living there. As a geographical curiosity, there's a little mini glacier at the ground of the ravine.

4. Day

Singing Sands

The "singing sands" of Khongorin-Els are an area filled with dunes, which rise from the surrounding steppe rather abrubtly This mountain range out of sand is over 100 km long and up to 20 km wide. Its name alludes to the sound that the wind makes when it stirs up sand at the ridge of each dune.

5. Day

Monastery ruins

The ruins of two old monasteries lie in a bend of the river Ongi. Their derelict remains sit in an undulating landscape offering the opportunity for romantic walks.

  • Stay the night in a tent.
6. Day

Tuvchun-Khiid

The monk and sculptor Zanabazar lived and worked in Tuvkhun-Khiid in the 16th century. Parts of the monastery at more than 2000 m elevation serve as a museum today.
We arrive here in the evening, and will delay the visit to the next morning.

7. Day

Big Waterfall

We continue our trip along the Orkhon river, to the largest waterfall in Mongolia.
  • Visit at the monastery Tuvkhun-Khiid.

  • Visit at Orkhon Khurkhree (waterfall)
  • Arrival at nomads family.
  • Stay the night in a tent or a yurt.
8. Day

Fresh Spring Water

After approaching the mountains, we take the last dozen km by foot or on horseback. The destination and quarters for the night is a place with both hot and cold mineral springs.
9. + 10. Day

Nomadic life

The next day we descend to the valley again, freshly bathed We spend one day with the nomads, enjoy the heartfelt hospitality, and learn a lot about the life of the herders in Mongolia at the same time.

11. Day

The Old Capital

In Kharkhorin, Genghis Khan ordered to erect the capital of his mongolian empire at the time. The monastery Erdene-Zuu is also located here, which housed more than thousand monks in historic times.

12. Day

Khogno-Khan Uul

The Khogno-Khan Uul is a mountain of almost 2000 m elevation, located near our route. It is the center of a protected area that is home to ibex, wolves and various pretador birds, among others. There is a small monastery at the foot of the mountain. The ruins of another historic monastery can be reached by foot in less than an hour on a nice and easy path.

13. Day

Wild Horses

In the Khustain Nuruu national park, a project has been running for several years to reestablish the original wild horses (Takhi) again in Mongolia. There are several places near the river where the beautiful and normally very shy animals gather for drinking every morning and evening. This offers a great opportunity to watch them and take pictures.
14. Day

Cultural Program

The last day is fully dedicated to culture. Several museums and the famous Gandan Monastery offer an informative and relaxed finale to our trip. In the evening we meet for a farewell dinner, and afterwards there's an opportunity to party mongolian style.
There's also a big exhibition "Great Mongolia 800" this year, as well as many other related events.

15. Day
